Cattell
Elementary
Des Moines Public Schools
Neighborhood Rejuvenation
This two-story school was built
on the play fields adjacent to the original building and
has become a great source of community pride. The design
includes a brick masonry exterior with sloping roof lines
reminiscent of the original Cattell school. Stone lintels
and terra cotta sculptures were preserved and re-installed
for further recall of the past.
The
facility is heated and cooled with a programmable variable
air volume system divided into four main zones and equipped
with 100 percent outside air economizer cycles. Other features
include a building-wide telephone intercom system, a cable
TV distribution system for educational programming and networking,
and a low-maintenance computer-controlled emergency backup
lighting system.
