The Long-Awaited Athene North Shore Recreation Area at Easter Lake Breaks Ground

A large and diverse crowd gathered to break ground on the Athene North Shore Recreation Area at Easter Lake in Des Moines. This amazing project will be one of the most accessible waterfront parks in the country and the first of its kind to utilize a comprehensive “universal design” to accommodate members of our community that bravely endure physical and mental disabilities including disabled veterans and their families. Adaptive recreation equipment including an accessible pontoon boat built for wheelchairs users, full emersion zero-entry water ramps, extra wide trails, de-escalation rooms along with natural playscapes are all part of this exciting, new project which will continue to put our community on the map for tolerance and inclusivity.
