About the project

When Southridge Mall opened in 1975 it was a traditional, enclosed mall.  Fast forward 35 years and the mall’s configuration, tenant vacancies and declining retail sales had clearly taken their toll.  As the retail landscape dramatically changed, it was clear that to survive Southridge needed to change right along with it and thus the Southridge Mall Power Center and (open air) Plaza concept was developed.

The project led the way for Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) to re-purpose the former 64,000 square foot JCPenney store for DMACC’s newest location.  A longtime client of The Hansen Company we helped DMACC transform this space into new classrooms, an automotive-training center and other coveted industrial training programs.
